Preliminary note: the insights in the relation between HRV and ICC have much developed since the first release of this article. The suggestions below however are still valid; for more on HRV vs. ICC please refer to other articles listed on the info page.

Introduction
Over the past decade, Internal Cardiac Coherence, shortly ICC, has become an increasingly valued and introduced phenomenon in the practice of biometrics. Yet, it's actual clinical, (alt-) therapeutical and biofeedback potential is still a developing, and indeed challenging field.

Backgrounds on Heart Rate Variability
American Heart Association
(original link no longer available)

The last two decades have witnessed the recognition of a significant relationship between the autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular mortality, including sudden cardiac death. Experimental evidence for an association between propensity for lethal arrhythmias and signs of either increased sympathetic or reduced vagal activity has spurred efforts for the development of quantitative markers of autonomic activity. HRV represents one of the most promising such markers. The apparently easy derivation of this measure has popularized its use. As many commercial devices now provide an automated measurement of HRV, the cardiologist has been provided with a seemingly simple tool for both research and clinical studies. However, the significance and meaning of the many different measures of HRV are more complex than generally appreciated, and there is a potential for incorrect conclusions and for excessive or unfounded extrapolations.

Life and Wellness - A dynamic equilibrium of life-force and self-awareness. The innermost working principle of biology and of all life is truly "infinite" in the sense that it operates outside the arena of normal actions and reactions. When we have a bliss- or telepatic experience, this does not mean an expanded connection with "outside" world, but instead a withdrawal from our externally oriented action-and-reaction patterns, resulting in a deeper connection with the inner, cause-less or "eternal" flow of life itself. In the picture, the flower figure forms a matrix for harmonic fluctuations in golden-mean ratio's, which are understood to form the universal container and source of life force. The external results are for example fractality and Fibonacci ratios in physiology and in biological rhythms. The individual effect is a feeling of infinite connectedness, inspiration and bliss. The nested sine waves, when in proper phase-alignment,
together form a regular pulse stream, creating a flow of continuity. This flow - "that which we hold on to" - forms the back-bone of individual existence and causes a feeling of time and space, substantiation, segregation and body and senses. Life-force is attractive or centre-seeking, and initially tends toward indiscriminate action (or thermo-dynamics in physics). Self-awareness is expansive and transforms into emotion (or inertia in physics). Allthough opposite in a certain way, only when these two universal, creative aspects come together, forming equilibrium, life can be created. When they get coherent and more and more harmonically inclusive in the heart and brain, physical and psychic wellness are the result, and ultimately spiritual realisation.

Pattern recognition in EKG and EEG
and its use in biofeedback, therapy and coaching

The various patterns and rhythms in the EKG and EEG, and generally all biological fluctuations, when they are coherent, reflect the innermost harmonic principles of life in a measurable way. The basic concept is that the powerfull, sentient energies contained herein are not expressed directly, but instead in the form of a dynamic and sustainable interaction between life-force and self-awareness.

Unified Field Theory linking Physics, Life and Consciousness

A. From a classical viewpoint, life-force and self-awareness are effects emerging from a material process. Nevertheless they play a crucial role in all creation. Unified Field theory should therefore include these effects, which are traditionally considered "subjective", besides the classical, "objective" laws of physics.

B. (Sensory) perception is an intrinsic part of physics. The classical viewpoint is, that individual perception is caused by the objective sensory organs plus nervous system. Unified Field theory should be able to describe the phenomenon of perception on a more fundamental level.

This implies first of all that a Unified Field theory linking physics, life and consciousness should start with a proper, and not confused philosophical outlook.
